Possum Kingdom vs. Lewisville vs. Grapevine: Where Should You Wakesurf?

Three of the most popular wakesurf lakes in North Texas, compared honestly by people who run on all of them. Here's how to pick the right one for your crew, your drive, and your day.

The short answer

For an easy, close-to-Dallas day, pick Grapevine (about 20 minutes) or Lewisville (about 30 minutes). Both are reliable, fun, and have plenty of room to ride. For a special-occasion destination day with the prettiest water in Texas, make the drive to Possum Kingdom (about 90 minutes from Fort Worth).

You don't tow or launch anything either way — we deliver the boat and all the gear to the marina on whichever lake you choose.

"Which lake should we go to?" is the question we hear most, and it almost always comes down to three contenders: Grapevine and Lewisville (the close, easy DFW favorites) and Possum Kingdom (the bucket-list destination lake). There's no single right answer — it depends on how far you want to drive, how big your group is, and whether the lake is a backdrop or the whole point. Here's the honest breakdown.

The three lakes at a glance

Possum Kingdom~90 min from Fort WorthStunning, vacation feelSpecial occasions, lake-house weekends, photos

Lake Grapevine — the easy yes

Grapevine, TX · ~20 min from Dallas · DFW's most accessible lake

If you want the least driving and the most surfing, Grapevine wins. It sits right between Dallas and Fort Worth, minutes from DFW Airport, so it's the obvious pick for a half-day or an after-work session. The water is dependable, the marinas are friendly, and you can be carving the wake before some people have finished their morning coffee.

It's also our top recommendation for first-timers and families — short drive, low fuss, and easy to bail early or stay late depending on how the day's going.

Best for: first-timers, families, tight schedules, and maximum water time with minimum windshield time.

Lake Lewisville — the big group day

Lewisville, TX · ~30 min from Dallas · Dallas's premier wakesurf destination

Lewisville is the big, do-it-all lake of North Texas — lots of water, lots of marinas (Pier 121, Hidden Cove, Eagle Point and more), and a true summer-on-the-water energy. It's our most-booked lake, and for good reason: it's close to the city, has plenty of room to ride, and brings a fun scene if you like a little buzz around you.

This is the one to pick for a birthday, a bachelor or bachelorette day, or any time you're wrangling a crowd and want the easiest logistics for everyone driving in from around the Metroplex.

Best for: big friend groups, birthday and bachelor/bachelorette days, and a classic, lively Dallas lake day.

Possum Kingdom — the destination

Graford, TX · ~90 min from Fort Worth · Texas's most beautiful lake

Worth every minute of the drive. "PK" has the clearest, bluest water in the state, dramatic cliffs (yes, including Hell's Gate), and a real vacation feel. This is the lake for a special occasion or a full destination day where the scenery is half the fun — the kind of day that ends up all over everyone's camera roll.

The trade-off is simple: it's the longest drive of the three, so it's best as a planned-ahead trip rather than a spur-of-the-moment session. If you've already got lake-house guests at Possum Kingdom, even better — we'll meet you right at your marina.

Best for: special occasions, lake-house weekends, milestone celebrations, and groups who want the most beautiful water in Texas.

How to actually choose

If you're stuck between them, run through these quick questions:

How far do you want to drive? Under 30 minutes from Dallas means Grapevine or Lewisville. If the drive is part of the adventure, Possum Kingdom rewards it.

What's the occasion? A casual ride, a lesson, or an after-work session points to Grapevine. A big celebration with a crowd leans Lewisville. A milestone, a weekend away, or a photo-worthy day is Possum Kingdom.

How calm do you need the water? Mornings and weekdays are calmest everywhere, which is ideal for beginners. If glassy, quieter water is the priority, ask us — depending on the day we may steer you to a quieter window or even a calmer lake like Ray Roberts.

Whichever lake you pick, the boat comes the same way

Every Wake rental is all-inclusive, on all of our lakes. You get:

  • A 2023 Tige Z3 — a premium surf boat, delivered to your marina
  • Surfboards, wakeboards, and a tube — beginner-friendly gear for the whole group
  • Life jackets — sized for adults and kids
  • An optional captain — who drives, sets the wave, and coaches first-timers for free

Pricing is the same at every lake: $225/hour self-drive (experienced drivers, up to 10 guests) or add a captain for $50/hour ($275/hour, up to 12 guests). Lessons are $275/hour. Gas is billed separately at cost. See the full cost breakdown.

The other five lakes we run

Grapevine, Lewisville, and Possum Kingdom get the most questions, but they're not your only options. We also deliver to Texoma (huge open water on the Oklahoma line), Ray Roberts (calm and scenic, great for kids), Ray Hubbard (east Dallas's convenient home water), Cedar Creek (the southeast lake-house favorite), and Tawakoni (the quiet east-side escape for holiday weekends). Frequently asked questions

What is the best lake to wakesurf near Dallas?

For most people, Grapevine (~20 min) and Lewisville (~30 min) are the easiest, most fun everyday picks. For a special-occasion destination day with the prettiest water in Texas, Possum Kingdom (~90 min from Fort Worth) is worth the drive. We deliver the boat and gear to whichever you pick.

Possum Kingdom or Lewisville for a group?

Lewisville for an easy, lively big-group day close to the city; Possum Kingdom when the trip itself is the event — a bachelorette, a milestone birthday, or a lake-house weekend where the scenery is half the fun.

Which lake is best for beginners?

Calmer water is easier to learn on, so Ray Roberts or a weekday morning on Grapevine or Lewisville is ideal. On a captained trip your driver shapes a clean, beginner-friendly wave and coaches each rider for free, so beginners get up regardless of the lake.

How far is Possum Kingdom from DFW?

Possum Kingdom is in Graford, about 90 minutes west of Fort Worth — the longest drive of our lakes, but the most scenic by far.

Do I have to tow or launch a boat?

No. We deliver the 2023 Tige Z3 to the marina on your lake and meet you there with all the gear. You just bring sunscreen, towels, and snacks.
