When Is Wakesurf Season in North Texas?
The best months to ride near Dallas-Fort Worth, water temps by season, and the secret calm windows most people miss.
The short answer
Prime wakesurf season in North Texas runs May through October. That's when lake water stays above about 68°F — and by mid-summer it climbs into the mid-80s, warm enough that nobody needs a wetsuit. June through August is peak. But the locals' favorite stretch is often late September and October: the water is still warm, the summer crowds are gone, and the lakes go quiet and glassy.
Best time of day, any month? Early morning — calm, glassy water before the other boats wake it up.
One of the perks of riding in Texas: the season is long and the water gets genuinely warm. Here's how the months stack up so you can pick the right window for your group — whether you're chasing peak-summer energy or quiet, wide-open fall water.
Month by month
| Window | Water & weather | What it's like to ride |
|---|---|---|
| May | Water warming past ~68°F; air comfortable | Season kicks off. Pleasant, not yet crowded — a great soft open. |
| June–Aug | Peak: warm water into the mid-80s, long days, hot afternoons | Prime time and the busiest. Book weekends early; ride mornings to beat heat and chop. |
| Sept | Still warm water; cooling air, fewer boats | The sweet spot — summer water, autumn calm. |
| Oct | Water holds warm; crisp mornings | "Secret season." Quiet lakes, beautiful light, easy booking. |
(Rule of thumb for North Texas lakes: the swim-and-surf season lasts roughly May to October, with summer water averaging in the mid-80s and fall water still in the low-to-mid 70s — plenty warm for wakesurfing.)
The calm windows most people miss
If you want the glassiest water and the most relaxed day, aim for one of these:
Weekday mornings. All summer long, a Tuesday at 9 a.m. is a different lake than a Saturday at 2 p.m. — far fewer boats, flatter water, easier launching. (It's also the easiest time to grab a same-week booking.)
Early fall. Once school's back, the lakes empty out while the water's still warm. September and October give you summer riding with the lake nearly to yourself.
Sunrise and sunset sessions. The first and last couple of hours of daylight are the calmest, coolest, and prettiest of the day.

Frequently asked questions
Is it too cold to wakesurf in October?
Usually not. North Texas lake water holds warmth well into fall — October mornings can be crisp, but the water stays comfortable, and a warm afternoon makes for a beautiful, quiet ride.
When do the lakes get busiest?
Summer weekends and holidays — especially the Fourth of July and Memorial/Labor Day weekends. If you want calm water and easy booking, go on a weekday or in September–October.
What if the weather turns on my booking day?
We keep an eye on the forecast and work with you — rescheduling for genuinely unsafe weather is no problem. Texas summer storms tend to be brief, so we'll find you a good window.
How far ahead should I book?
For a summer weekend, the earlier the better — popular dates fill up. Weekday and fall slots are usually easy to grab on shorter notice.
